Nelson
Nelson is nestled on the top end of the South Island, two hours to the west of its famous neighbour Marlborough. The wineries are mostly located on the plains, southwest of the town of Nelson, and up on the hills of Upper Moutere.

The region receives a lot more rain than its neighbour Marlborough, however also receives enough sunshine to balance out the rainfall. Nelson’s northern exposure gives it more second highest total hours of sunshine in the whole country. The soil structure tends to clay loams over hard clay subsoils.

Heavier reds like Cabernet Sauvignon don’t do so well in Nelson, where lighter reds like Pinot Noir and even Montepulciano have had more success. In the whites, Chardonnay of very high quality is being produced, with lesser amounts of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chenin Blanc are also cultivated.

Although it is one of the smaller wine regions, the fact that you can visit most of the wineries in a single day is a bonus!

Raymond Chan
Bright, light straw-yellow colour, pale on the rim. The nose is fresh with light and gentle aromas of passionfruit and gooseberries with hints of tropical fruits, fresh herbs, unveiling some mineral nuances. Dry to taste and light-medium bodied, the palate is gently concentrated with tightly bound, integrated flavours of passionfruit and gooseberries melded with tropical fruits, fresh herbs and white florals. The mouthfeel is thirst-quenchingly dry with fine-grained phenolic textures, and soft, ripe, bur fresh acidity. The acidity provides freshness and energy and carries the wine to a mouthwatering finish with restrained gooseberry and passionfruit notes. This is a tightly bound Sauvignon Blanc with light passionfruit and gooseberry fruit flavours on a thirst-quenching, brisk palate. Match with seafood and Pacific Rim fare over the next 2 years. 49% Ranzau, 42% Richmond Plains and 9% Mahana fruit, all from the Waimea Plains, tank-fermented, 20% by indigenous yeasts to 12.5% alc. and 3.0 g/L RS, some batches given skin contact, the wine aged 5 months on lees with some batonnage. Vegan wine. Certified Asurequality organic
