Waiheke Island
Waiheke Island is renowned for producing world-class red wines and more recently white wines as well.

Waiheke has become known as New Zealand's "island of wine," home to a dedicated group of winegrowers who have successfully matched the maritime climate and ancient soil structures to the selection of classical grape varieties to produce red and white wines with distinctive varietal character.

The climate is well suited to growing Bordeaux wine-type grapes, though some Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc varieties are also considered to be good.

Waiheke winegrowers regularly win awards for Syrah (Kennedy Point's 2007 Syrah won best Syrah in the world in 2009), proving the island's terroir suits it well.

Very full, even, dark ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the edge. The nose is elegant in proportion with full and stylish aromas of ripe blackberry fruit along with boysenberries and plums, with subtle notes of Asian spices and liquorice, unfolding black pepper and some violet perfumes. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich flavours of ripe blackberries with notes of boysenberries, plums and liquorice, revealing earth, spices and black pepper. The flavours provide good weight and presence. The fruit is supported by sine-grained tannin structure with fresh, balanced acidity, and the wine carries to a lingering finish. This is a stylish and elegant Syrah with rich fruit flavours of ripe blackberries, boysenberries and plums with spices, earth and pepper on a palate with presence. Match with roast lamb and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 7-9 years. 98% Syrah with 2% Viognier, fermented with 2% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 60% new French oak barriques.

Quite a dense, almost syrupy syrah with dark berry, black berry, cocoa, liquorice, spice, dried fruits and prune characters. Rich, warming Christmas cake-like wine that offers good drinking now but no rush.
